The learners in Room 19 have been working hard on their volcanoes to be included in our volcanic landscape. They made the mould for the plaster of paris, making sure that it was cone shaped and had wouldn’t leak when filled. Then theycarved details into the finished volcano and painted it with colours they thought a volcano would be.

Welcome to Akomanga 16's blog. We are a class of year 3 and 4 learners at Hamilton East School, New Zealand. Room 16 are developing skills to become life long learners. They will experience opportunities to teach, learn and practise. If you are taking part in distance learning and unable to access seesaw, please see the distance learning tab for activities. You can email me at adent@hameast.school.nz if you have photos to share.

The Arts and Dance
This term Room 19 is focussing on The Arts and retelling Māori Legends through dance, drama, music and visual art.

This week we learnt about the story of how the Te Ika-a-Maui (North Island) and Te Waiponamu (South Island) were created. The class chose a part of the story and in groups came up with a movement they felt reflected this. They then presented their movement to the class and in groups put all of the movements together in an interpretive dance.

Cross Country
It's that time of year again! Come the cold weather it's time to get warm and set some personal goals.
This term in the lead up to cross country learners are attempting to beat their personal best and focussing on how running (and indeed any physical activity) changes how their body feels. We're focussing on the positive effects of physical activity on both our bodies and our minds.
A quick reminder that if your learner doesn't enjoy running in bare feet then they should bring suitable running shoes to practise in.

agency = I can make choices and act on these choices to make difference in my life" from a student reflection.
Over the last two weeks rooms 19 and 20 have had the opportunity to engage in self directed learning. Every Wednesday Room19 learners choose their own tasks and activities to complete over the day.
It has been an amazing learning experience both for the learners and myself as a teacher and I am excited to facilitate more experiences in the classroom that promote learner agency.

Nature Sculptures.
Learners from Akomanga 19 watched a video about how to turn objects from their backyard into nature sculptures. Their task was to head outside and find natural objects they could use to make a picture of an insect, then one of themselves. Some learners went even further and created sculptures of people in their bubbles.
