Self portraits

Last week Room 16 started on their self portrait art. The artist that inspired our portraits is Armedeo Modigliani.

We noticed that Modigliani’s art had certain characteristics and we used these as inspiration for our self-portraits.

These characteristics included:

Long necks.

Narrow heads that are cocked to the side.

Muted colours that are quite saturated.

Simple lines without a lot of detail.

This week we began adding pastel to our portraits faces. They are looking great so far, I can’t wait to see what the finished portraits look like. https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1gZftrLnxdb3oRgl-D_Ratx9jEL_mrM-ghttps://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1QC57F-MyrgkS72LF983jK627ZoVqzvBghttps://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1Y2Bikxn-20jKE-aGBMQFJdLmRHXUsLjw

Our finished portraits

I think you’ll agree with me that these look fantastic. The learners put in so much time and effort to make their portraits amazing. Getting to know me

Kia ora koutou!

My name is Ange Dent and I will be your child’s teacher this year. I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself.

This is my fourth year teaching Year Three and Four learners at Hamilton East School.

My education journey started when I studied Psychology and Sociology at the University of Auckland. After leaving university I studied Child Psychotherapy and then worked as an early childhood educator for a number of years.

I left teaching to look after my children (Noah, Isobel and Jack) and returned to the workforce as a teacher aide in a special needs unit of an Australian high school.

When my children and I returned to New Zealand, I decided it was time to follow my dream and gained a Graduate Diploma in Teaching. Hamilton East was one of my practicum schools. I loved it here so much that I was very excited to be offered a teaching position.

My passions include art and craft (I am an avid sewist and make most of my clothes), I love reading, writing, and being in and around the water. In my spare time, I race dirt karts and collect and fix vintage sewing machines.

Your child’s year in Room 16 is going to be full of fun, lots of learning and exciting adventures.

If at any time you have any questions, problems, or just want to have a chat about what’s going on, please don’t hesitate to contact me, either via email or on Seesaw.

Ngā mihi nui,

Ange Dent

Printmaking skills

Over the last couple of terms room 16’s visual arts focus has been printmaking.
We’ve explored various methods of printmaking, including different types of stamps and reliefs and different media to print these stamps.

Here is a few photos of our final printmaking exploration. The stamp was made with ballpoint on foam sheets, then printed with rollers. The stamp was then rotated 90 degrees to make the final design.

Let's Get Physical

After Tomo shared her story about her daily run with her daughter, Akomanga 16 learners were invited to share some of the ways they have been staying active during lockdown.

Being active and getting outside in the sunshine is so important for our hauora.

We also had a zoom meeting to catch up with each other. Connection and relationships are another way we can look after our hauora.

I am grateful

This week Akonmanga 16 did a Gratitude Scavenger Hunt. We had to find:

Something that is useful.

Something that is your favourite colour.

Something that makes you happy.

Something that makes you feel safe.

Something that makes a beautiful sound.

Something that makes you laugh.

A place that you love.

Something you are grateful for.

Something that you enjoy looking at.

There are so many things that we found to be grateful for:

Running with Tomo and Sunny

Here's a story that Tomo shared about her daily run with her daughter. I hope you like it. Maybe you could make a book with some physical activities that you do each day to keep healthy?
